... for the horse
Holger Hetzel’s equestrian centre has unique facilities that support his effective training programmes for young horses. His training concept focuses on correct basic schooling tailored to the horses’ individual needs.
“I don’t think there’s any other type of sport that involves as much brainwork or where you can learn so much every day as riding,“ said the Nations Cup rider. “Obviously, you can buy horses that have already been trained to competition standard and ride them successfully at shows, but one of the challenges that I relish most is bringing out the maximum potential of a youngster. It’s great to watch the young horses making progress, achieving your training goals and bringing home rosettes from shows. It’s also very motivating.“
Holger’s full-time riders Christine Dorenkamp, Tobias Thoenes and Katharina Rehm are in charge of training and competing the young horses. They have internalised Holger Hetzel’s training principles and are able to optimally present the horses at competitions. “My riders are absolute professionals and they all follow my philosophy. I know I can rely on them one-hundred percent,” he said.
Holger Hetzel’s top priority when training young horses is to focus on them as individuals. He takes each horse’s character, training level, strengths and weaknesses into account and encourages individual development according to ability.
A solid schooling concept that is suitable for the horse’s age brings out its strengths and encourages it to give its best. “We obviously gear our training concepts to competition riding, but we also ensure that the horses do lots of different activities so that they don’t get bored,“ said Holger Hetzel, explaining the key to success. In addition to training under the saddle, the horses are lunged, allowed to run loose in the indoor school, hacked out and turned out on the field.
Not all the horses at Buschstrasse 21 belong to Holger Hetzel. Some of them are temporarily at livery there for schooling and competition experience. “A lot of our customers stable their horses here until they are ready for them to compete on,” said Holger. Holger ensures a smooth transition for these horses from national to international competition sport and the owners also receive regular progress reports.
Sometimes Holger files the horse’s details away for the owners in case they ask him to sell it on after it has completed its training.
The list of top competition horses that received their basic training at Holger Hetzel’s stables is long.
The entire team of riders and grooms all follow Holger’s effective training ‘code of practice’ in their day to day work. And that’s the key to success!
