Five days of top show jumping sport in Goch: Laura Hetzel and Angel d´Or win the Grand Prix

Spectators at the Holger Hetzel Equestrian Sports Centre’s show jumping event thoroughly enjoyed the Goch Grand Prix jump-off on the evening of the May bank holiday. Only three of the 32 horses and riders competing in the first round managed to cross the finishing line of Peter Schumacher’s challenging three-star course without faults. 23 year-old Laura Hetzel (Goch) achieved the fastest clear round in the jump-off at 40.86 seconds with her Westphalian mare Angel d´Or by Askari. Markus Renzel (Oer-Erkenschwick) and Canmore were the runners up (clear round in 42.66 seconds) and third place went to Dutch rider Jody van Gerwen with Bright Side, who had two fences down in the jump-off.

Winner Laura Hetzel received a great compliment from second-placed rider Markus Renzel, who won the Goch Grand Prix 2022 with Com Es Ta: “I’d have liked to have repeated last year’s result, but Laura was on such good form today, she was unbeatable.” One particularly remarkable fact about Holger Hetzel’s daughter’s grand prix win is that Laura and Angel d´Or only teamed up a month ago.

The U25 tour final, a one-star 1.40m class, was won by Malin Reipert (Linnich) with her mare Nikita. Johannes Ehning (Stadtlohn) and his Holstein gelding C-Jay came first in the second-biggest class of the show.

Holger Hetzel was absolutely delighted with his daughter’s performance, and with a lot of other things: “I think our five-day competition programme, with classes that are tailored to professionals, amateurs and younger riders from Germany and abroad, is a great way to start the outdoor season.” The next international event at the Hetzel Equestrian Sport Centre is the Hetzel Young Horse Masters, a fantastic show jumping event for young horses at the end of July.
